Biogas statistics for 2024
The 2024 biogas statistics have been released, providing an updated overview of developments in the biogas market. This year, we have expanded the statistics with new analyses and improved visualizations, making it easy to explore key figures and trends.

Biogas Oslofjord's statistics provide a more detailed insight than the publicly available statistics. This insight helps create a better foundation for analyzing development trends and identifying potential bottlenecks within the biogas industry. Furthermore, it provides better information to assess the impact of reduced greenhouse gas emissions from biogas production, as well as its use as a soil improver and fertilizer.

As before, the statistics are available in Power BI, where you can explore details on production, upgrading to biofuels, feedstock sources, plant ownership, and more. For the first time, the statistics include a comprehensive overview of food waste bag solutions in Norwegian municipalities for 2025. In addition, we have mapped planned expansions and new facilities, providing valuable insights into the industry's future growth.

Main findings from the biogas statistics for 2024:

  • The number of facilities increased by 7 in 2024, bringing the total to 66 biogas plants in Norway.
  • Biogas production reached 828 GWh in 2024, compared to 724 GWh (revised down from 740 GWh the previous year), an increase of approximately 14%.
  • Upgrading to CBG and LBG accounted for 64% (528 GWh) of the biogas produced.
  • LBG now makes up the majority of upgraded gas at 54%, an increase of 24% from the previous year.
  • Sewage sludge is the largest feedstock category, followed by food waste, fish silage, and animal manure. Animal manure has increased by 25% over the past year.
  • If all ideas, plans, and ongoing constructions are realized, production will increase by 2,500 GWh.
  • The number of biogas refueling stations is 38, with 31 new stations opening soon.
  • The biogas industry in Norway employs approximately 1,400 full-time equivalents and contributes around NOK 1,660 million in annual value creation (excluding construction).
