Biogas statistics 2025

The biogas statistics for 2025 have been released and provide an updated overview of developments in the biogas market. This year, we have expanded the statistics with new analyses and improved visualizations, making it easy to explore key figures and trends.

The industry statistics from Biogas Norway and Biogas Oslofjord are now available for the period 2021–2025 and provide more detailed insights than publicly available statistics. This information helps create a stronger basis for analyzing development trends and identifying potential bottlenecks within the biogas industry. Furthermore, it offers improved data for assessing the impact of reduced greenhouse gas emissions from biogas production, as well as its use as a soil improver and fertilizer.

The statistics are, as before, available in Power BI, where you can explore detailed information on production, upgrading to biofuel, feedstock sources, plant ownership, and more.

Main findings from the biogas statistics for 2025:

  • Since 2021, 20 new facilities have been put into operation.

  • Since 2024, biogas production has increased slightly, from 801 GWh to 815 GWh.

  • Biogas upgrading now accounts for a total of 68%, with equal shares of LBG and CBG.

  • Total feedstock has increased by 15% to approximately 235,000 tonnes of dry matter. Sewage sludge remains the largest feedstock category measured by dry matter. Fish sludge has seen the highest growth in percentage terms (300+).

  • The industry employs approximately 1,400 full-time equivalents in the operational phase, in addition to employment and value creation related to construction. The figures are based on key metrics.
